Service Above Self has long been a hallmark of Rotarians who devote their time and energy to helping their neighbors — near and far — in significant ways.  Rotary created the Service Above Self Award to recognize members who fully embody our primary motto. While many Rotary members distinguish themselves through service, we want to especially recognize those who make it a way of life.  Each year, each district governor can nominate only one member whose service activities have had an impact on humanity. From this pool of exceptional candidates, just 150 recipients are chosen, and this year, from the Rotary Club of San Mateo we recognize John Barrett.

John joined Rotary in 1995 and has served as D5150 International Service Committee Chair (2024-2027), Rotary Club of San Mateo President (2023-2024), RC San Mateo International Service Committee, RC San Mateo Youth Scholarship Committee and serves on the RC San Mateo Senior Housing Committee.

John has been key to obtaining sponsorships & attendees for the annual fundraiser for scholarships (Car Show Event). He serves on the Haciendas Board, which manages 2 low-income senior housing units built by RC San Mateo (131 units).

John & fellow Rotarian Hans Eide (dec) saw the need for a primary school during a Rotary/Wheelchair Foundation project where they initially helped deliver 300 wheelchairs to landmine/Agent Orange victims in Cambodia and Laos. They started with 50 students, adding 50 students per year. He has managed to construct the classrooms, kitchen, cafeteria the purchase of the land. The school provides free education, uniforms, transportation and 2 meals a day to every student.  John also manages the trust that now runs the school. supported by 300 donors and major benefactors for the school.   He has made 31 trips to Cambodia to date.

John has continued to serve his Club, District and the school in Cambodia through never-ending efforts - despite health challenges. He is always working to help others, both seniors and children here and in Cambodia. He participates in community efforts constantly, both through Rotary, scholarships and other organizations. He has an open mind, open ears and a wide-open heart that never stops. John is the epitome of Service Above Self and is a credit to his club, our district and our world.
