Herbst Theater, War Memorial & Performing Arts Center
401 Van Ness Avenue

Join music lovers from throughout the Bay Area at the newly renovated Herbst Theater in the War Memorial Veterans Building for the Rotary World Peace Concert.

The concert features Northern California singer and songwriter Brett Dennen and 2010 American Idol first runner up Crystal Bowersox performing favorite songs as we celebrate peace through music.

Marvel at the newly renovated Herbst Theater with its beautiful murals from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The murals were originally painted by Frank Brangwyn, one of the leading muralists of his day, with works commissioned for both the Venice and the Chicago Expositions. Brangwyn

was instructed to paint 8 panels for the Court of Abundance, part of the fine art section of the fair. The panels are 18 feet to 25 feet high with arched tops, four on each side of the theater. They reflect the four elements of earth (Dancing the Grapes and The Fruit Pickers), air (The Windmill and The Hunters), fire (Primitive Fire and Industrial Fire), and water (The Net and The Fountain). The records, books, and artworks of the Panama-Pacific Exposition were handed over to the Memorial Trustees who, at the time, were in the process of constructing the War Memorial complex to honor the soldiers and war workers of World War I. Branwyn’s murals were incorporated into the plans for the Herbst Theater, where they have hung since its doors first opened in 1932. (Thank you to Peter Fries and the Archives of the Trustees of the War Memorial for this piece of Herbst Theater history.)
