SHIP ACCESSIBILITY AND SAFETY TIPS

Hangar Deck Access: There are two ways to access the USS Hornet aircraft carrier museum Hangar Deck - via a steep set of stairs up to the deck or a "scissor lift" operated by ship engineers. To accommodate people with mobility disabilities or concerns about navigating the stairs, Rotarian volunteers will be on hand on the pier to assist attendees to the lift as needed. In addition to our event, attendees will be able to enjoy all of the museum exhibits on the Hangar Deck including vintage aircraft, the Apollo and Gemini Programs, rotating exhibits, and more. The Hangar Deck is also equipped with loaner wheelchairs and accessible restrooms.

Docent and Independent Tours: We have arranged free veteran-led docent group tours for our event attendees to other parts of the ship such as the flight deck and Captain’s bridge. After a brief safety briefing, attendees may also explore the ship independently using self-guided museum maps available on the Hangar Deck. Please note that the rest of the museum ship has narrow passageways, significantly raised thresholds, and very steep ladders. Due to safety concerns, all visitors exploring other parts of the ship must be at least 48 inches tall, and children under 16 must be with an adult at all times.

Service Animals: Trained service animals, defined by the ADA as only dogs, and in some circumstances, miniature horses, are welcome aboard the USS Hornet. Animals not included in the ADA definition, such as comfort or therapy animals, are not permitted on board, and the museum reserves the right to request that disruptive service animals be removed.

Please reference a 1-page visual aid on the ship's accessibility and expanded service animals policy under Files for additional information.
