Congratulations to Rotary District 5150 Rotarian of the Month, Tim Hornbecker from the Rotary Club of San Francisco

Tim Hornbecker of The Rotary Club of San Francisco has led a life of serving others. His career took off in Portland, Oregon where he served for 16 years as executive director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, in charge of 600 volunteers, a soup kitchen and food bank program, rehabilitation centers, and nine thrift stores, which earned him the “charity czar” moniker. A career change took him to The Arc – Washington StateDesertArcThe Arc San Francisco and The Arc of Alameda County. As Executive Director of The Arc its mission is to support individuals with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities to meet the challenges of adulthood while achieving personal goals and lifelong success. His wife Pat was also on the various Arc Board’s as President. Tim plans to retire at the end of the year when his term on the board of The Arc of the United States ends.

Tim first joined the East Portland Rotary Club in 1982 and joined Rotary clubs wherever he moved, including Palm Desert, CaliforniaSeattle, Washington and San Francisco, California. Tim and his family hosted Rotary Exchange Students for five years. His service to Rotary has extended from sergeant-at-arms to secretary to treasurer to community service chair. During his year as president of the Rotary Club of San Francisco 2010-11, he focused on such youth programs as Camp Enterprise (now RYLA), Interact and Rotaract, and introduced the Thanksgiving lunch at The Arc San Francisco and Salvation Army Thrift Store – San Francisco, CA, which he says “is always close to my heart.”

After six years on the board of the San Francisco Rotary Foundation, Tim assumed the presidency and finishes his 2-year term on June 30, 2020. He has been busy leading the Foundation to respond to the urgency of Covid-19 and help direct over $35,000 to those immediate relief efforts including $10k to the Food Bank and over $30k for PPE’s. Also, his flexibility in leadership has allowed a streamlined grant process over his term as Foundation President. Tim is always the first to volunteer for community service projects and just this spring has made PPE’s, delivered food to the Homeless, and distributed See’s Candies to the community.

Tim plans to enjoy his retirement from the ARC and as President of the SF Rotary Foundation with his wife Pat and her 4 children, his two kids, 3 step kids, and 4 grandchildren. If that does not keep him busy enough golf, yoga and walking two miles a day will. He also plays blues harmonica “with a few bands” and spearheads Rotary’s golf outings. Of course, Tim will stay active in Rotary as he continues living the motto “SERVICE ABOVE SELF” 😊

Once again, congratulations to Tim Hornbecker Rotarian of the Month, July 2020 for Rotary District 5150!
